The number of apartment developments in the ACT is significantly increasing in all suburbs as part of a policy of the ACT Government to increase housing density near town centres and along transport corridors.  Already signs of these developments can be seen as residential buildings in excess of 6 storeys, and even as high as 20+ storeys, become evident in areas such as Belconnen, Kingston/Barton, Woden, Gungahlin, Dickson, Braddon, Tuggeranong and the new suburbs in Molonglo. Click here to read an article published in the Canberra Times on the dramatic fall in Canberra house approvals over five years as unit approvals increase.

The stated objective of the ACT Government is to have more than half of Canberra’s dwellings in the form of strata developments as a means of reducing government infrastructure costs. This policy will also increase their revenue in rates and land taxes.

The ACT branch of the Owners Corporation Network (OCN) has joined with several other organisations to promote and lodge a petition with the ACT Legislative Assembly. The petition puts forward a number of concerns in relation to the above policy.  If you are interested in this issue, click here to view and sign the petition.

The petition will be presented to the ACT Legislative Assembly on or about 13 February 2018.
